If an AI does more harm than good to the environment, it is not environmentally sustainable. But is Artificial intelligence sustainable or not?
Let us understand the meaning of sustainability first. Sustainability can be termed an object’s ability to give gains without harming the user or the environment. Suppose a particular object needs a lot of maintenance and the output cost doesn’t match the input cost.
It is not a sustainable object. Similarly, if an AI does more harm than good to the environment, it is not environmentally sustainable. But is Artificial Intelligence sustainable or not?
The answer to this question lies in the way we use AI. Suppose we burn fossil fuels and generate electric energy for AI. It is not sustainable as we know that fossil fuels are non-renewable and cause heavy pollution. They aren’t a good option to make electricity from. Then what is a good option?
Green energy- Green energy is obtained from the sun, wind, water etc. Like the sunlight can be converted into solar energy into photovoltaic cells. Windmills are used to make wind power into electricity. And water can be stored in dams and then used the kinetic energy of water to convert it to electricity.
These are the sources of green energy which cause lesser pollution than the non-renewable ones. Furthermore, if we use greener sources of energy, then AI also becomes sustainable. Hence the choice lies in our hands.
